The Swedish Swedish section
IAS - Sweden

International Aid Services Sweden is a Sweden based humanitarian organisation, which aim at assisting in disaster areas and to bring aid and development into third world countries. The organisation is registered as an association in Sweden and is active in many nations. This page will give you a brief introduction.

Our mission statement

The Association

The association is non-profit making, non-political with the objective to start and/or support emergency relief and development projects in countries where needs exist. The association will work under the principle 'Help people to help themselves'. Further, IAS will encourage and strengthen local initiatives by local groups and organisations in countries where the association operates. This is done by providing financial, material and spiritual assistance.

IAS Sweden has about 300 employees and operates in Sudan, Chad, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somaliland and Sri Lanka.

The start of IAS Sweden

International Aid Services, IAS, was formed in 1990 by four relief workers with experiances from different relief projects in Southern Sudan. The civil war in Sudan, which began in 1983, had forced hundred of thousands of people to flee from their homes. Several where killed while fleeing and the peacetalkes held during this period of time did not result in any ceasefire or end of war. Many of the Sudanese people fled to neighbouring countries. Some Sudanese also moved to refugee camps within Sudan. By the end of the 1980:ies the Sudanese freedom movement, Sudan Peoples Liberation Army, SPLA, had captured large areas and more or less the whole countryside was controlled by the them. This caused a increased need of humanitarian aid in the region.

We began our operations in the Sudan in 1990 and today we are working in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda and Sri Lanka.

Thematic goals

1) To identify the areas where the humanitarian needs are at most and provide assistance to the target group. The identified areas are the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.

2) To give priority to projects within
Water, Education, Agriculture, Health and Church support.

3) To actively work towards reaching the
UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015.

Geographical areas of priority: Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

Working through partnership

To a large extent IAS search for local organisations that can carry out each project. Creating local partnerships will ease the continuency of the project when IAS of various reasons have to pull out of the region/area. This is the case in most projects. In situations when urgent relief projects are needed IAS use to be the only organisation in charge for the fullfillment of the project. However, IAS prefer that local existing organisations are responsible for all long term development projects.
